Buoyed by billions of investment dollars from the Chinese, Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has indicated an intention to be more accessible to the media. This is meant to free his final term of “speculation” as he prepares to launch his development blueprint, he said. The announcement of the change in engagement style was done at a rare press conference on Friday convened to present the ‘goodies’ he had brought back from a week-long visit to China where he signed a clutch of multi-million infrastructure deals.
Mr Koroma became the first African head of state to meet with President Xi Jinping on Chinese soil since the change in leadership of the Asian state. The Sierra Leonean leader had been invited by Tsinghua University to make an address at the World Peace Forum. The two leaders will expand bilateral relations, they agreed during the visit that resulted in the signing and confirmation of pending investment agreements totalling over $7 billion.
Three major projects stand out: a $1.5 billion rubber plantation project, an energy and mining project worth $6.5 billion, and the much-talked about new airport deal said to cost $300 million. The Chinese will also help resuscitate Sierra Leone`s tourism sector.
